Senior Bennett leads time in multiple areas, propels Texas to victory

To Lexy Bennett, the team’s performance comes way before her own — so much so the senior doesn’t even know she is moving up in the career charts and is on pace to be in the top spots upon Texas softball players.

The Kingwood native is currently tied for fifth for career hits at Texas and tied for sixth in home runs. In the 2012 season she leads the team with a .512 batting average, recording a total of 21 hits in 41 at bats. While having an on base percentage of .585 percent and striking out only two times this season so far, she is a huge asset for the Longhorns offensive strike.

This isn’t new for Bennett though. In 2011 she led the Big 12 in batting average, slugging percentage and on base percentage while setting a UT single-season record for all three categories. While leading the Longhorns in hits last season she is already on track to surpass that this season.

Wednesday night Texas shut out Texas State twice in a doubleheader. In those two games Bennett batted in three runs while scoring three also. The captain also hit her 27th career home run and moved her RBI total up to 23 on the season, where she is fifth in UT history.

Bennett has been a key leader for the Longhorns this season, being one of three senior captains. Instead of focusing on herself and her memorable season, she is focused on making sure the team is getting better and staying mentally focused.

“It is good; actually it is news to me [on moving up in the career stats],” said Bennett. “I think it is exciting, but more importantly, it is about getting the job done.”

Coming off a challenging weekend in California the right-handed batter wanted the team to stay strong through their doubleheader.

As her team moved to 14-1 on the season, Bennett was impressed with their great overall play as a team.

“Our defense is strong right now and our pitching staff is doing incredible,” said Bennett. “Having our offense produce as well is really good. I think we are doing a great job right now.”

While on her way to one of her best seasons here at UT and becoming on of the best Texas softball players Bennett is focused on her team. With 15 games in the record books so far this season she is trying to propel her team to be the best in the country. For her, that can only happen one game at a time and one at bat at a time.
