Texas rocks Incarnate Word

Texas softball beat down the Incarnate Word Cardinals, 11-0, in its second fall game Sunday. The Longhorns jumped on the Cardinals early, as the Longhorns scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning — something that led to a game-plan change.

“Coming in to the game, our focus was going to be to add in a few signals and work in a little bit of short game. We got away from that a little bit when we put up a seven spot in the first inning,” head coach Connie Clark said.

After an explosive first inning, Texas scored four runs the rest of the game. As if a 7-0 lead wasn’t a big enough cushion, the pitching staff shut out the Cardinals. Freshman pitcher Erica Wright pitched the third, fourth and fifth innings and put on a dominating performance, striking out four batters while only allowing two hits and one walk.

“She’s a great competitor,” Clark said. “She’s got very good stuff, and she was working a curve ball and a changeup today, which is something she’s been keying on, really, since she got here.”

The Longhorns will face Galveston Community College at McCombs Field at 7 p.m. Friday.
