Kansas might have won the Big 12, but Oklahoma senior guard Buddy Hield took the Conference’s Player of the Year award, the Big 12 announced on Sunday.

Hield, who won the award for the second-straight year, led the Big 12 in scoring by a wide margin. The Bahamas native put up 25.1 points per game, compared to second-place Georges Niang from Iowa State, who averaged 19.4 points.

Hield also led the conference with a 47.3 three-point shooting percentage and made 124 three-pointers. He was named a finalist for the Naismith Trophy and is considered to be one of the favorites to win the award, which goes to the best player in the country.

Tubby Smith wins Big 12 Coach of the Year

  • A jump from three to nine Big 12 wins was enough for Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith to take the conference’s Coach of the Year award Sunday.

Smith made the move to Lubbock three years ago as an attempt to get the Red Raiders back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007, when legendary coach Bob Knight was at the helm.

Texas Tech appears well on its way to achieving that goal. The Red Raiders started the season 11–1 and have a 19–11 overall record and 9–9 Big 12 record, including home wins over Texas and Oklahoma.

Ellis, Roach grab final weekly awards

  • Kansas senior forward Perry Ellis and Texas freshman guard Kerwin Roach took the last Big 12 weekly awards on Sunday.

Ellis grabbed the Player of the Week award after finishing out the regular season with two-straight 20-plus point games last week. He finished with 11 20-point games this season.

Roach took the Newcomer of the Week award after leading the Longhorns to a 62-50 win over Oklahoma State on Friday. He scored nine of Texas’s last 14 points of the game and finished with 15 points, his eighth game with double-digit points.

Kansas remains No. 1 in AP poll

  • Kansas will head into the postseason as the No. 1 team in the AP rankings released on Monday. The Jayhawks have been the top team in the poll for four weeks this season and will likely be the top overall seed when the NCAA tournament bracket is released Monday.

Oklahoma held its spot at No. 6 while West Virginia moved up one spot to No. 9 after taking down Texas Tech and Baylor last week.

Iowa State and Texas held their No. 21 and No. 23 positions respectively, despite losses to Kansas, while Baylor slid three spots to No. 22 after a home loss to West Virginia.

Texas Tech picked up just one vote in the final rankings before the tournament.
