Five free classes to take in Austin this month

While your class workload has died down for the summer, break a sweat that’s not about your grades. Take advantage of your newfound free time and learn a new skill or hobby with one of these free local classes.

If you’re itching to get your groove on to some Motown favorites, come to this introductory blues dance class and learn everything you need to know about swing dancing. The event is hosted by Go Dance and promises a smooth, linear and sexy dance that will get you moving like Marvin Gaye.

For a greater variety of dance lessons, come out to the Long Center’s Dell Hall and join Ballet Austin’s Butler Center for Dance & Fitness for their summer instructional dance series, where you’ll get to take center stage. This summer’s upcoming themes are Bollywood dance and Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.”

ColdTowne believes the best way to learn improv is by doing it. Taught by ColdTowne Conservatory faculty, this introductory improv class will include a warmup, games, the basic principles of improv and stage time to hone your new skills. If you’ve ever watched an improv show and thought it might be fun to try, come check this out on the first and third Mondays of the month.

Don’t let that brain get slow during your off time this summer. Instead, take a trip down to Brainy Day Puzzle Camp and learn how to solve brainteasers alongside participants of all ages. The class is designed to include beginners, so you’ll be a puzzle pro in no time.

If you’ve ever wondered, “What’s this yoga thing all about?” head down to CorePower Yoga on any Friday of the year and find out. The class takes place in a warm studio and focus on yoga postures and principles. This class is just one out of Fresh Friday Austin’s line-up of free Friday fitness classes all around Austin, so if yoga isn’t your thing, look into any of the other classes offered weekly.
