The Austin Police Department will shut down traffic in the downtown area on Halloween night starting at 6 p.m., although large crowds aren’t expected to show considering the holiday falls on a Monday, APD Commander David Mahoney said.

Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Streets will be closed off starting from I-35 on the east side and ending at Brazos Street on the west side of downtown.

Mahoney, alongside other APD officers and Travis County officials, issued a word of caution regarding costumes.

“Remember about leaving things that look like weapons … at home,” Mahoney said. “It’s just easier for everyone not to bring those down here.”

An increased police presence is expected to be in the area, with bike patrols making rounds throughout the night.
