Women’s tennis travels out west

Disappointment overcame the Longhorns after a first-round loss to Denver at the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic on Feb. 24. Texas players held their heads low as an early loss in doubles competition proved to be the deciding factor in Denver’s 4-3 victory.

But the Longhorns held their heads high in the two ensuing matches by knocking off Tulane and dominating Tulsa to end the tournament.

The Longhorns head out west this weekend for matches against No. 16 Stanford (5–1) and Fresno State.

Stanford has been dominant this season and perfect at home. The Cardinal have taken down two top-10 teams and their only loss of the season came against No. 1 Florida. The Longhorns square off against the Cardinal Saturday at 2 p.m.

Texas will face Fresno State (2–2) Sunday at 1 p.m.

Texas hopes for strong performances from its underclassmen. Freshman Bianca Turati enters the weekend ranked 39th in the nation in singles play. Turati has been the story of the year for Texas after climbing up the national rankings.

The Longhorns will also search for some much-needed consistency in their doubles play, which has frequently plagued them in close losses this season. The 35th-ranked duo of freshman Petra Granic and junior Dani Wagland will need to ignite a spark in doubles competition for Texas to pick up wins against both opponents.

Texas looks to build on its momentum this weekend by adding two more decisive wins to its resume.
