A homeless man in East Campus threatened to kill a UT student early Friday morning after she refused to give him money, according to the UT and Austin Police Departments.

The student, government senior Quinn Snyder, told police she was walking east toward campus and was crossing Guadalupe Street when a man, who has since been identified as 24-year-old Christopher Crowley, ran toward her and began demanding money, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Crowley then told Snyder, “Don’t make me take you to an ATM to get $30 out,” according to the Statesman who obtained the arrest affidavit. When Snyder again tried to walk away, she said Crowley grabbed her backpack, trying to pull it off of her and said, “I am going to kill you.”

According to the Statesman, Snyder was able to walk away after a vehicle drove up to intervene, but Crowley still continued to follow Snyder and yelled, “Don’t call the police on me … When I kill someone for money it will be your fault.”

UTPD reported the incident late Monday afternoon in the Campus Watch, which presents selected daily crimes reported to or observed by UTPD in the form of emails to subscribers.

According to the Campus Watch, approximately 20 minutes elapsed before UTPD was notified of the incident. Officers searched the area but were unable to find the offender. Almost an hour after the crime occurred, a UTPD assistant chief and sergeant were inside the Starbucks at 24th and San Antonio streets when “a man matching the description of the suspect entered the cafe,” after which Snyder was able to identify as the man who had tried to rob her. Crowley was then transported to Travis County Central Booking.

Crowley was charged with attempted robbery with bail set at $15,000. He is currently being held at the Travis County Jail.
