Ruby’s BBQ near UT Austin campus to close after almost 30 years of business

Ruby’s BBQ is closing its doors after 29 years on the Drag, according to the Austin Chronicle.

The restaurant's official last day is still unannounced, but an employee said it would likely be near the end of February.

Owner Pat Mares opened Ruby’s in 1988, and it has been serving up barbeque over brisket, rib, chicken and turkey every since. The Guadalupe Street staple also offers cajun cuisine including gumbo, crawfish and jambalaya, as well as sides of salads, tacos and chili.

In a statement to the Chronicle, Mares said the difficult decision to close was made in light of the changing Austin food scene and increasing cost of keeping the store running.

She confirmed Ruby’s would be replaced by another food establishment, and said with her new time off, she plans to “visit family and take care of pressing projects at (her) house, kick back with friends, and in general attend to all the facets of (her) life that have been neglected the past couple of years," according to the Chronicle.
