Texas sophomore guard Andrew Jones reached a milestone on the path to his recovery from leukemia on Saturday as he was released from the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

The news of Jones’ release comes less than a month after the Irving, Texas, native was diagnosed with leukemia on Jan. 10.

“I was released from MD Anderson Cancer Center on Saturday night (Feb. 24) around 5 p.m. and have started receiving treatments on an outpatient basis,” Jones said in a statement. “That was a great night and a big step for me and my family.”

Since being diagnosed, Jones has received an outpouring of support from around the nation. The Andrew Jones and Family Support Fund, the official and family-approved fundraising page for Jones, has gathered $195,837 to date.

“I’m really thankful for all the love and support that has been shown to me and to my family,” Jones said. “It has truly been overwhelming.”

Jones and his family plan to remain in Houston for the next stage of his recovery. Despite the diagnosis, the Texas guard still maintains hope of eventually returning to the court.

“I hope you’ll continue to keep me in your daily thoughts and prayers,” Jones said. “Together, we WILL win this fight.”
