After 3 ½ months of waiting, Texas golf is back.

It wasn’t the spring season opener the Longhorns anticipated, which was originally scheduled to be last week at the All-American Intercollegiate in Humble, Texas, before a winter storm locked the team, like many Texans, inside.

However, behind graduate transfer Hunter Ostrom, senior Christoffer Bring and sophomore Mason Nome, the Longhorns still managed to secure a second place finish in their first tournament of the season at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas. Ostrom shot a 4-under 212 and Bring shot a 3-under 213 as the two finished second and third individually in addition to Nome’s 1-under 215 finish.

The three Longhorns finished in the top five, though junior Parker Coody and sophomore Will Thomson both finished outside the top 60.

Through the first day, the Longhorns sat at 6-over par as a team and two shots behind Texas A&M, the eventual winners, before play was suspended due to darkness. While Ostrom kept pace with the leaders through the first day and tied for first at 4-under par, Bring struggled and tied for 15th at 2-over par.

After a 4-under 68 performance Tuesday, Bring stormed back and helped give the Longhorns a three-stroke advantage over Houston, though it wasn’t able to bridge the gap between it and Texas A&M.

Nome, meanwhile, quietly enjoyed a quaint performance overshadowed by Ostrom and Bring’s pack-leading heroics.

Nome shot 1-over, 2-under and even-par in his three rounds at the meet to slide in at fifth for the tournament. The sophomore tied for seventh through the first day with an even performance, eight spots ahead of Bring.

As a team, the Longhorns finished 6-over 870 during the short two-day tournament.

The Longhorns return to the course next week at the Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio.
