Looking forward, looking back on a semester of news

Looking Back:

  • In September, Student Government leaders called on President Joe Biden to increase the amount of student loan debt forgiven to at least $50,000.
  • Gov. Greg Abbott secured a third term as Texas governor in the midterm election while 73% of Travis County voters cast their ballots for challenger Beto O’Rourke.
  • In his State of the University address, President Hartzell announced that the University acquired the Boulevard apartments to allocate to faculty members.
  • The death of Mahsa Amini by Iranian police and the onslaught of legislative changes to women’s abortion rights in Texas caused many students to band together in protest.

Looking Forward:

  • In the spring, professors will be required to include accommodations for pregnant and parenting students in the class syllabus.
  • Early voting for mayoral and city council run-off elections are open from Dec. 1 to Dec. 9 and election day is on Dec. 13, which is after classes end for UT students.
  • While the University plans to reassess traffic policies on Speedway, students may have to watch their step as robot dogs are set to trot their paws on campus early next year.
  • Noble 2500, an apartment complex which failed to house students during the fall semester despite completed leases, is expected to open in December.
  • UT scientists have joined a global initiative to learn more about earthquakes and volcanoes through data collected by underwater instruments at active earthquake areas around the world.
