With the fall season well underway, two Longhorns have already grabbed the attention of the Southeastern Conference. In consecutive weeks, the SEC recognized senior Christiaan Maas and graduate senior Matt Comegys as its conference golfers of the week.
Comegys received this honor after his third tournament of the season, the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sept. 24. His remarkable final round score of two-under secured him a tie for second in the tournament, while also propelling the Longhorns to fifth place in the tournament.
While appreciative of the award, the Texas Tech transfer is focused on upcoming tournaments.
“It’s a good award to have and good to build off of,” Comegys said. “I just have to keep my head down and keep working at it and see if we can keep it going.”
Maas received the SEC Golfer of the Week award for the second time in his collegiate career after an impressive performance at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational, a tournament where he received runner-up honors.
Maas knows that consistency is more important than just one strong round. Being consistent and reliable starts with keeping a level head, even when he is facing a tough shot.
“The one key thing is trying to stay focused for 20 seconds at a time,” Maas said. “Twenty seconds over the ball and outside of that, just let it go. Otherwise, you can break yourself down.”
Beyond his honors, Maas reflected on what it means to wear burnt orange. To him, it’s about character, humility and representing the program with pride long after graduation. He pointed to Longhorn alumnus Scottie Scheffler as an example of how being a Longhorn extends beyond success on the course.
“He’s probably my biggest role model right now,” Maas said. “His golf is one factor of it, but the way he is around his family and his faith — I think he’s the one person everyone can look up to, no matter the sport.”
The team prides itself on being a close-knit group, one that celebrates successes and pushes one another to improve. That sense of camaraderie and support has become integral to the team’s dynamic, helping it stay grounded and connected through long stretches of competition.
“We’re such a tight-knit group,” senior Tommy Morrison said. “I’ve been roommates with Christiaan Maas for a couple of years now. (The team) feels like family to me.”
Comegys and Maas’ back-to-back SEC honors not only highlight their individual growth but also the standard they’ve set for the rest of the team. As the fall season comes to a close, both golfers remain focused on keeping the momentum going rather than dwelling on recognition.
