After three seasons as a Texas assistant coach, Tina Thompson has been named the head coach of the Virginia women’s basketball team.

The Longhorns handled business on the home court of the Frank Erwin Center on Monday night, defeating 7-seeded Arizona State to advance to the Sweet Sixteen, 85-65.

Head coach Karen Aston has another highly-seeded team aimed at making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. This year's team boasts two seniors ready to make a big final statement in burnt orange uniforms. 

“I think as a competitor you never want to lose,” McCarty said after the game. “But at this point we can’t drown in our sorrows. We’ll see them again.”
