Mack Speaks: No starter yet at QB

A few notes from Mack Brown today:

David Ash and Case McCoy continue to battle for the quarterback spot, though neither has separated, according to Brown.

"It has to happen, you can't force it to happen. We thought it would happen in the spring and it didn't."

Ash and McCoy, who split starts last season, are worried more about winning than playing. Freshmen Conner Brewer and Jalen Overstreet likely won't get in the mix.

Brown said he first wants a game manager at quarterback.

Junior cornerback Carrington Byndom will "be one of the best defensive backs we've had and will end up being one of the best in the nation."

The running back position should be settled by third week of preseason. Sophomores Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron will likely split carries with freshman Johnathan Gray.

Gray "can be a factor" in the Wild position handled so effectively by Fozzy Whittaker.

JUCO newcomers Donald Hawkins and Brandon Moore "will either start or get significant playing time." Hawkins is penciled in at left tackle, Moore at defensive tackle.

Incoming freshman wide receivers Kendall Sanders, Cayleb Jones and Marcus Johnson need to step up, Brown said.

No surprise transfers or players lost to academics this summer.
