The Longhorns’ time in the Big 12 tournament was over before it had a chance to start.

Texas tallied just one match win in a 4-1 defeat to Oklahoma in the first round of the Big 12 tournament in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Friday.

“They just outplayed us,” head coach Michael Center said. “We struggled to finish a match. We had opportunities to split sets at some spots, and we didn’t get the job done.”

The Longhorns struggled right from the start in singles play against the Sooners. Redshirt freshman Julian Zlobinsky dropped the first set 6-0 and fell in straight sets to put Texas behind 1-0 early.

Freshman Rodrigo Banzer didn’t fare much better. He lost to Oklahoma’s Florin Bragusi in straight sets to give the Sooners’ a 2-0 lead. Junior George Goldhoff followed that up with a straight-set loss to Axel Alvarez Llamas to put Texas in a 3-0 hole.

Freshman Harrison Scott kept the Longhorns’ hopes alive with a win against Alex Ghilea, but senior Michael Riechmann fell in three sets to Maxime Mora, sealing the Longhorns’ loss.

The Longhorns, who finished the regular season at No. 18 in the ITA rankings, will have to wait until Tuesday to find out if they made the field for the NCAA tournament.
