Ceremony shows off center’s features

Student volunteers passed out programs embedded with wildflower seeds to demonstrate the environmentally sustainable efforts of the Student Activity Center at an opening ceremony on Monday.

The University Unions hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly developed center, which was completed on Jan. 18. About 200 students and faculty attended the event. University officials scheduled the ceremony for Monday to ensure the building was fully furnished, said Andrew Nash, chair of the University Unions Board of Directors.

Nash said the board wanted to guarantee the building could be used to the full extent of its purposes on opening day. Engineers designed the building with additional spaces for students to use outside of the Texas Union, he said.

“Everything is there for a purpose with a lot of flexible spaces for students to utilize,” Nash said. “We have a black box theater, a ballroom, a dance rehearsal room and several different-sized meeting rooms.”

“It went really well,” said Nick Parras, associate director of the Student Events Center. “The students running the event did a great job.”
