UT will automatically admit students in the top 7 percent of Texas high school graduating classes next year, down from the top 8 percent this academic year.
UT President William Powers Jr. said in a letter to Texas’ Commissioner of Education Michael Williams that UT used data from recent years to determine 7 percent of automatic admissions from the 2014 graduating class will fill 75 percent of its enrollment capacity for in-state first year students.
Texas’ Top 10 Percent Law, established in 1997, requires public universities in Texas to automatically admit any student who graduates in the top 10 percent of their class. Starting with the incoming class of 2011, UT-Austin had to automatically admit only 75 percent of its enrollment capacity for in-state freshmen, which was the top 8 percent of graduating classes in 2011 and 2012.
