Voters split on concealed carry for universities

Texas voters are largely split on whether or not to allow concealed handguns on college campuses, according to a poll conducted by UT and The Texas Tribune.

Three bills in the Texas Legislature would allow concealed carry license holders to carry handguns on university campuses. Each has been referred to various committees but none have been approved.

The poll, which surveyed 1,200 voters’ attitudes toward gun laws in February, found that 48 percent expressed some form of support for allowing faculty, staff and students to carry concealed firearms on campus while 47 percent expressed some form of opposition.

UT spokesman Gary Susswein said the University will not comment directly on the poll’s findings, but reiterated that UT President William Powers Jr.’s opposition to concealed carry on university property has not changed.

“He does not think allowing guns on campus will increase public safety,” Susswein said.

Of those surveyed, 28 percent indicated strong support for allowing concealed-carry on university campuses, while 35 percent strongly opposed the measure.
