UT President Gregory Fenves sent a campuswide email Sunday regarding safety near campus following the stabbing of two UT students last week. Fenves said in the email he is working to obtain funding for additional UTPD officers and upgraded security-related technology in West Campus.
The Austin Police Department announced it will issue search warrants for any drivers who refuse to comply with alcohol detection tests to prevent drunk driving and encourage residents to arrange a ride home during the holidays.
As the semester draws to a close, the UT Police Department is scheduled to host two more requested active shooter response trainings, which are likely to be the final classes on top of the 21 presented so far this semester.
In 2017, Austin had the most hate crimes in Texas. However, Austin is now behind cities of the same size in terms of hate crimes despite a small increase in such incidents in 2018, according to the FBI Hate Crime Statistics report.
