Law Students for Black Lives, directed by Alyssa Gordon, Ayo Adaranijo and Sheela Ranganathan, aims to use the trio’s legal knowledge to support the Black Lives Matter movement by educating their community and supporting other law students.
Typically, incoming students attend an in-person orientation where they stay in dorms, participate in information sessions, attend social events and register for classes. Because of the pandemic, this year’s orientation is occurring virtually, and the price was cut in half.
On May 23, bestselling author and speaker Brené Brown will deliver UT’s universitywide commencement speech. When she first agreed to speak, she thought she’d stand in front of thousands of students inside of the Frank Erwin Center. Now, she’ll be speaking to her laptop camera from her office in Houston.
At first, Alessandria Garza said she was unfazed. “I was like, ‘It's fine,’ but it’s when I called my mom and had to tell her that graduation was canceled (that) I just started bursting into tears,” theatre studies senior Garza said.
