Texas adds another coach

Texas added another name to its rebuilt coaching roster on Tuesday: Bo Davis.

Davis comes from Alabama and will coach the Longhorns’ defensive tackles. He spent four years under Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa as defensive line coach, but will work primarily with Texas’ interior defenders. Davis replaces Mike Tolleson, who retired last month.

“His players have had a great deal of success, and he has been a part of some of the best defenses and teams in the nation throughout his career,” Texas head coach Mack Brown said in a statement.

For the past three years, Davis-coached defensive lines at Alabama helped the Crimson Tide rank no worse than fourth in scoring defense each season. In 2008 and 2009, Alabama had the nation’s second-best rush defense.

Davis also coached under Saban at LSU and with the Miami Dolphins. He will work with a much different head coach in Brown, both in disposition and strategy, but Davis compared the two and their legacies favorably.

“I've been in the SEC all my life and I never thought about venturing out of the SEC,” Davis said on Tuesday. “I had opportunities to stay in the SEC but having the opportunity to come to Texas was very surprising, and I thought it was a great opportunity.”

As a former assistant at Galena Park North Shore high school outside Houston, Davis could prove to be another successful recruiter in that area. During his time at Alabama he covered all of East Texas, including the Houston area, for Saban.

“Wherever coach Brown feels the need to put me, I have a lot of roots here so that's not a problem for me,” Davis said.
