Men’s tennis: Texas loses second straight

Texas suffered its second loss in a row and third overall, falling to USC 5-2 in Los Angeles on Friday.

Texas now has to try to stop the bleeding against Texas San Antonio on Thursday before No. 1 Virginia comes into Austin.

Once again, the lone bright spot for Texas in this match came from doubles. Texas was able to secure the point and take a lead into singles. Junior Jean Andersen returned to the lineup and along with senior Ed Corrie, completing Texas' No. 4 ranked duo. They, along with the team tandem of Senior Kellen Damico and freshman David Holiner, were each able to take their matches to secure the doubles point for Texas.

For the second match in a row, Texas stumbled when it got to singles. Sophomore Daniel Whitehead was able to take his point after his opponent was forced to retire due to injury in the second set. Whitehead had taken the first set 7-5, and was up 2-0 in the second before Trojan freshman Raymond Sarmiento had to retire. Whiteheads win evened up the match at 2-2 before USC took control of the match.

Whitehead's 7-5 win in the first set would be the only set Texas would win, as USC went on to take the rest of the points in straight sets.
