Goodwin shining for men’s track team

Since earning second place at the Big 12 Championship meet in mid-May, the Texas men’s track and field team qualified nine entries for the NCAA Championships June 8.

Among the qualifiers was Marquise Goodwin, Texas’ star long jumper as well as wide receiver for the University’s football team. Goodwin qualified for the national championship with a 27-foot jump.

“I thought we had good performances from Goodwin in the long jump,” said head coach Bubba Thornton. “That was an incredible jump in those conditions.”

Goodwin, the reigning NCAA Outdoor long jump champion and a three-time All-American, also qualified in the 4×100-meter relay with his teammates Alex Williams, Trevante Rhodes and D.J. Monroe after they ran a blistering 39.59-second relay.

Also qualifying for the NCAA Championships were Hayden Baillio and Jacob Thormaehlen in the shot put and Jamal Wilson in the high jump. Sophomore Keiron Stewart qualified in the 110-meter hurdles, and freshman Mark Jackson made it through in the triple jump to advance.

The championship meet will run from June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
