Freshman Spieth earns spot at U.S. Open

Freshman Jordan Spieth is slated to appear in his first major championship at the U.S. Open after helping the Longhorns to their third NCAA National Title last weekend. The 112th U.S. Open begins Thursday, June 14, at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.

The United States Golf Association announced that the All-American will replace Brandt Snedeker in the U.S. Open field.

The day after the Longhorn’s National Title, Spieth participated in a 36-hole qualifier in Houston. Spieth just missed qualification for the 156-player field and was listed as a first alternate before Snedeker dropped out.

In his first major championship start, Spieth will tee up against Bill Haas and Nick Watney Thursday afternoon at the ninth tee. Spieth will be joined in the field by former Longhorn Bob Estes, who also begins play at the ninth hole Thursday morning.

Spieth will also compete in the PGA Tour John Deere Classic and AT&T National in July. These will be his third and fourth PGA Tour events this year. He tied for 41st in the 2012 Valero Texas Open.

For the Longhorns this year, Spieth was named to the All-Big 12 Team and was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and Big 12 Player of the Year.
