Texas finishes second in round one at Isleworth Collegiate Invitational

Playing in its first tournament in nearly a month, the Texas Longhorns got off to a fast start at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational on Sunday by finishing in second place through one round of golf.

No. 2 Texas shot an even par 288 in day one of the three-day event, and it enters Monday four strokes back of first place California. The Longhorns hold a three shot advantage over Illinois, who is currently in third place out of the 15-team field.

Texas was led Sunday by strong individual performances by sophomore Jordan Spieth and junior Cody Gribble. Spieth carded a 4-under 68 in round one, which puts him one shot back on the individual standings. Gribble finished just one stroke behind Spieth with a 3-under 69, placing him in a tie for fourth thus far.

Junior Toni Hakula registered the third best score among the Longhorns golfers, tallying a score of 3-over 75. Red shirt senior Julio Vegas and freshman Brandon Stone round out the scorecard for Texas, with each finishing the day with a score of 4-over 76.

The Longhorns have had recent success at this tournament, as they won the event last year with Spieth finishing at the top of the individual leaderboard. Texas has won one of its two tournaments in the 2012-13 season, and it is in position to make a run at its second event victory of the season after a strong showing Sunday.

The Longhorns resume play Monday at 8:40 a.m. on the first tee with Cal and Illinois.
