Cameron Ridley records first career double-double as Texas falls to UCLA in Houston

HOUSTON ‑ In his most complete collegiate game to date, freshman center Cameron Ridley tallied a team-high 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Unfortunately for Texas, Ridley’s output didn’t translate to a win as the Longhorns lost their second straight game, falling to 5-4 on the year.

Ridley enjoyed a fruitful first half with nine points and five boards on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. His three emphatic dunks woke up a mostly sleepy home crown on hand at Reliant Stadium and kept Texas afloat amid a poor shooting night as a team. The Longhorns would finish shooting 37.1-percent from the field.

“It was a good opportunity for my family to come watch me play,” Ridley said. “But towards the end of the game we have to become tougher as a team.”

Ridley, who attended Bush High School in Houston, leads the Longhorns in overall field goal percentage, shooting at a 51.5-percent clip entering the game against the Bruins. He finished shooting 5-of-6 from the field in 32 minutes of action, one minute off his season high of 33 against Georgetown.

“I watched him play in high school,” said Bruins head coach Ben Howland. “I thought ‘wow, I would love to recruit that kid.’ I think he’s a man, and he’s very physical and tough for a freshman. He’s going to be a heck of a player.”

For only the third game this season Ridley didn’t commit a turnover and he seemed to be comfortable mixing things up in the paint and drawing contact from the Bruins throughout the game. Ridley’s four made free throws matched a season high, and his two blocks continued his streak of recording at least one block to nine consecutive games.

“I thought Cam did a great job,” said Longhorns coach Rick Barnes. “We did a great job for about 36 minutes. We played with confidence, but we stopped listening and we stopped executing.”
