Longhorns lose to West Virginia, 67-60, in Big 12 Championships

After losing to the Mountaineers in overtime in early January and then coming back to win the rematch about two weeks later, Sunday night, it was again the Longhorns’ turn to take the loss on Sunday.

West Virginia held Texas to 21 points in the first half and the Longhorns second half efforts weren't enough to make up the deficit. Texas fell 67 – 60 to the Mountaineers in the semifinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

It was another game that looked good on paper but unfortunately for Texas, didn’t translate well onto the scoreboard. Senior Chassidy Fussell led the team with 15 points and sophomore Imani McGee-Stafford lead in rebounding, grabbing five boards. The Longhorns also snagged 41 rebounds compared to West Virginia’s 29. Not only did the Longhorns snag more boards, they also shot more accurately from the field, swatted away more blocks, had more assists and out-scored the Mountaineer bench.

Texas’s true downfall came not in their accuracy from the free throw line, but from the amount of trips they made to it. The Longhorns made just 19 visits to the line for a total of 14 successful shots, while the Mountaineers made 37 appearances for a total of 28 points, nine of which came in the final five minutes of the game.

Texas will know its next move on March 17 after the tournaments seeds are announced during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on ESPN.
