Sophomore Marquise Goodwin was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Central Field Athlete of the Year, the organization announced Monday.
This season, Goodwin, who also plays wide receiver for the Texas football team, claimed his second-straight Big 12 outdoor long jump crown with a collegiate personal best of 26-9.75 (8.17m). It is the fourth-best leap in Texas history.
By winning the Big 12 title, Goodwin completed a sweep of the league’s indoor/outdoor championships as he won the indoor title in February.
At the NCAA West region meet, Goodwin was the top qualifier to earn a spot in the finals. He will enter this week’s national meet as the defending champion in the event after taking last year’s title with a jump of 26-9. Goodwin also runs the third leg of Texas’ 4x100m relay with sophomore D.J. Monroe that will be competing this week in the semifinals.
The 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships start June 8 and run through June 11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
