Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump Friday afternoon after holding out at the Republican National Convention over the summer.

Cruz turned to Facebook to announce his support for the Republican nominee, one day before he is scheduled to speak at the Texas Tribune Festival on campus.

“After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump,” Cruz said in the Facebook statement.

Cruz cited six reasons he intended to vote for Trump: Supreme Court nominations, Obamacare, energy, immigration, national security and internet freedom.

“If Clinton wins, we know — with 100% certainty — that she would deliver on her left-wing promises, with devastating results for our country,” the statement said. “My conscience tells me I must do whatever I can to stop that.”

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, the Texas chair for the Trump campaign, applauded Cruz for endorsing Trump in a statement posted on Twitter.

“I am very pleased at the news that my friend, Senator Ted Cruz, is now supporting Donald Trump and joins the growing movement to Make America Great Again,” the statement said. “Ted’s support brings great value to the Trump team as our party coalesces and all conservatives unite to elect Trump and defeat Hillary Clinton.”

Cruz will speak tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. at Hogg Memorial Auditorium for the Texas Tribune Festival.
