The University of Texas has fired former quarterback Vince Young from his position as a Neighborhood Longhorns development officer, a part-time role with a $50,000 annual salary.

The Associated Press first reported Young’s firing. Young declined the AP’s request to comment.

In a letter obtained by the AP, Young’s apparent dismissal was handed down on March 1. The letter said Young was fired “for not demonstrating significant and sustained improvement in the performance of (his) job responsibilities and failing to maintain standards of conduct suitable and acceptable to the University.” The report also lists frequent absences and failure to communicate with superiors as a reason for Young’s firing.

Young was arrested on drunk driving charges in Fort Bend County less than one month before the date of his firing letter. The Feb. 4 arrest was his second DWI in three years.
