Guide to study breaks, making most out of last weeks in Austin

Zoe Tzanis

Raking through old notes, rereading passages, doing math problems — studying for finals is tiring. But, there are still activities students can do to relax and enjoy themselves during these busy times.

When stress levels get high, take a deep breath and consult this activity list compiled by the Texan to stay positive through finals and make the most out of your last few weeks in Austin.

Have a picnic by the Capitol

Less than a mile from campus, the Texas Capitol grounds are the perfect place to stake out for a few hours. Find a spot under one of the many low hanging trees or in the sun.

Bring some snacks and enjoy an afternoon studying or just relaxing beside the most iconic building in Texas.

Fuel up with coffee and a pastry from a local coffee shop

When in need of a caffeine pick-me-up, treat yourself to some quality Austin brews.

Lucky Lab Coffee Co., located at 2421 San Antonio St., offers a variety of coffee and tea options as well as homemade baked goods, such as breads, hand pies and croissants. With lots of outdoor seating, it’s a comfortable environment for both studying and relaxing with friends.

Mozart’s Coffee Roasters at 3825 Lake Austin Blvd. provides customers with a picturesque lakeside location, amazing sweets and one-of-a-kind coffee options.

Take a trip to Barton Springs

With its grassy hills and cold spring-fed pools, Barton Springs Pool is a must for all UT students. Stop by for a quick swim, paddleboard or take some time to sunbathe.

Make sure to invite friends along and get in some last minute memories.

Visit the Blanton Museum of Art

With a curated assortment of modern, Latin American and European art, the Blanton is located just off Speedway and has a little bit of something for everyone. Admission is free for all UT students.

Have a do-it-yourself spa day

Studying is hard work. Allow time for some pampering and self-reflection with a hot shower or some at-home yoga. Pick up a face mask, brew some tea and enjoy some pure relaxation time.

Eat the sort of food Austin is famous for

Austin is one of the best cities in the nation for foodies. Take advantage of the delicious grub before it’s too late.

If you haven’t already, pick up your last breakfast taco at Veracruz All Natural or Vaquero Taquero and visit your favorite food trucks like Spicy Boys or Bananarchy. Don’t forget to get some last minute Austin barbecue at Black’s Barbecue or Franklin Barbecue.

Head down to the Main Mall lawn

Soak up some vitamin D in UT’s most widely recognized campus location. Allow some time to take in the ambiance — students chatting with the bells of the Tower playing in the background. Catalog the feeling for that time in the near future when summer becomes irritating, boring or stressful.

Remember that this place exists and will be waiting for your inevitable return.
