Guide to finding menstrual care products on UT campus

Leena Alali, Senior News Reporter

For those who menstruate, there are various UT resources where the community can obtain pads, tampons and other personal care products. The Daily Texan has compiled a list of locations to access these resources around campus.

“It’s important that people, whether they are women, whether they’re nonbinary or transgender men, have that resource,”  philosophy junior Myles Deol said in regards to menstrual care access. “It’s not a luxury, (and) it shouldn’t be treated like a luxury.”

UT Outpost locations

The UT Outpost is an on-campus food pantry with four locations, all of which provide menstrual care products along with other resources for students such as professional clothing, foodstuffs and personal care products.

Location 1: Gender and Sexuality Center (WCP)

Located in the William C. Powers, Jr. Student Activity Center, the Gender and Sexuality Center provides free tampons, pantyliners and pads in room 2.112 and is open for all individuals on University campus to access Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The GSC acts as one of the four satellite locations of the UT Outpost, according to their website, and also provides dental dams and condoms. The women’s and gender-neutral restrooms located throughout the WCP also have a supply of pads and/or tampons that are frequently restocked by housekeeping.

Location 2: Patton Hall (RLP)

The ground floor of Patton Hall is a satellite location of the UT Outpost and is available for all College of Liberal Arts students, providing an array of menstrual care products and other resources Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to their website.

Location 3: Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs (SRH)

For those located on the outskirts of campus, the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs offers a satellite location within the Sid Richardson Hall 3.364 kitchen and is available for LBJ students Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to their website.

Location 4: Perry-Castañeda Library (PCL)

For a centrally located source, students can head to the University Writing Center lobby located in 2.330 of the Perry-Castañeda Library for menstrual care products. This location also serves as a UT Outpost satellite, according to their website, and is available for all students during PCL hours

Location 5: Texas Union
Managed by University Unions, the Texas Union women’s and gender-neutral restrooms have a supply of pads and tampons that are frequently restocked. These products are available for all students during Texas Union hours.

Select college women’s bathrooms

Several women’s restrooms on campus are stocked with tampons and pads by their respective college councils. Currently, the McCombs School of Business, University Teaching Center, Moody College of Communications, Engineering Education and Research Center, and Students Services Building have a supply of menstrual care products available. The availability of menstrual care products through individual college bathrooms varies and may include more buildings or be more limited in comparison to UT Outpost satellite centers.

Current initiatives

The Women’s Resource Agency, a resource provided by Student Government, is currently running a pilot program with University Unions to allocate funds to supply bathrooms within the Texas Union and WCP with menstrual care products, according to an email statement. Previous Daily Texan reporting states that the WRA hopes to expand this initiative to restrooms on campus.
