32-year legacy: Cain & Abel’s possible demolition by end of April

Popular West Campus bar Cain & Abel’s could be demolished by the end of April for the construction of a 30-story apartment tower, according to a permit filed yesterday by a private development company.

The bar has been serving the West Campus community in its original location on the corner of Rio Grande and 24th streets since 1991. It’s well known for its cheap daily food and drink specials, including $2 beers on Tuesdays.

Owner Ellis Winstanley confirmed with the Austin American-Statesman the bar will relocate to an undisclosed location before the end of April. At this time, there is no information about the apartment construction timeline.

Cain and Abel’s was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
