Heather Woofter will take over as dean of UT’s School of Architecture on Aug. 15 following her appointment to the position Wednesday.

Woofter is a registered architect and the director of the Sam Fox School’s College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design at Washington University in St. Louis. She is the owner and co-design principal of Axi:Ome, a design firm known for its expansion and renovation of St. Louis’ Center for Creative Arts in partnership with Christner Architects, as well as other projects in the cultural and arts sectors. She serves in architecture advisory roles to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the St. Louis Great Rivers Greenway Brickline project.

Woofter holds a bachelor and master of architecture from Virginia Tech and Harvard University and has served in teaching roles at both universities. In her current position at Washington University in St. Louis, she teaches the Practices course to first-year architecture students, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate studios.

Woofter’s dual identity as a professor and practicing architect bridges the gap between industry and research.

“It is an honor to join the UT-Austin community and the distinguished faculty, students and staff in the School of Architecture,” Woofter said to the University. “I look forward to future collaborations across campus and advancing our community vision in research and the design practices. UT-Austin is unique because of its breadth of exceptional allied disciplines within the School of Architecture, expanding the cultural discourse while tackling pressing issues of the contemporary world.”

Woofter will succeed Michelle Addington as dean, who has served in the position since 2017.
