The Longhorns began their SEC campaign on a 2-0 run this week, sweeping LSU in three sets at the Tigers’ home court after a win against Texas A&M two days prior.
The first set started with relentless back-and-forth play, with the two teams tying at 11 points before Texas exploded for an 8-3 run to grab the lead at 19-14. Texas won the set by holding off LSU to a score of 25-20.
Devin Kahahawai, who gained traction in Texas’ win over Hawaii, defined the second set. The junior served for an 8-0 run, pushing the Longhorns up to a 12-3 lead. Texas held onto Kahahawai’s advantage and fended the Tigers off despite several 2-0 runs, eventually settling the second set with 25-20.
During the third and final set, Texas started off trailing 10-9. Following a 5-0 run, the Longhorns kept the lead to cruise to a 25-12 finish — a fitting performance for their second match in the SEC landscape.
With a hitting percentage of .302, the Longhorns’ attack game was on a roll. Senior Madisen Skinner topped the board with 10 kills, sophomore Marianna Singletary had eight, seniors Reagan Rutherford and Jenna Wenaas each had seven kills and freshman Ayden Ames had six.
Defensively, Texas held LSU to a hitting percentage of just .081 in the third set. Kahahawai led the game with four blocks, with Singletary following her with three and Ames finishing with two. Junior Emma Halter led for digs with eight total, shutting down the Tigers’ attack game.
The Longhorns will return from Louisiana to host South Carolina at Gregory Gym on Wednesday.
