Chris Del Conte, Texas’ athletic director, is facing a contract extension that could keep him with the Longhorns through 2036 if approved by UT’s Board of Regents, as first reported by the Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bohls.
The UT Board of Regents meeting agenda book detailed Del Conte’s potential extension. The extension, and salary raise, will be voted upon Aug. 20-21 during the Board of Regents meeting.
Del Conte’s last contract extension occurred in 2023, keeping him in Austin through 2030 and guaranteeing salaries of at least $3 million during the last two years of the contract. This new extension potentially grants Del Conte a salary of over $3 million starting in 2027, with salaries of over $4 million during the final two years of the extension.
The potential extension comes after Texas acquired the Learfield Directors’ Cup for the second consecutive year, awarded to the nation’s most successful athletic program. The Longhorns have won the Directors’ Cup four times in the past six years, all after Del Conte came to Texas in December 2017.
Prior to his current stint at Texas, Del Conte served as athletic director at Rice from 2006-09 and at TCU from 2009-17. If the contract extension is approved, Del Conte will be set to serve as Texas’ athletic director for nearly twenty years.
