Filled with excitement and nerves, incoming students have begun to explore the Forty Acres, anticipating the first week of class. To welcome these new students, The Daily Texan found four events to look forward to around campus.
Party on the Plaza — Sept. 3
Students recognize Speedway for its tabling during the semester’s beginning weeks. Party on the Plaza offers the chance to speak to over 300 student organizations and campus resources. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Speedway Plaza’s yellow bricks, different spirit orgs and Greek life, as well as groups ranging from business to medical organizations, come together to promote their groups with flyers, posters and members. As one of UT’s main streets, Speedway stretches along many academic buildings, making it hard for students to miss the event and provides a good opportunity for students to find their place on campus.
Pluckers Free Appetizer Night — Aug. 25
Pluckers is a West Campus staple at UT, especially for game days and fun nights out. Whether in need of a mid-day lunch break or a late-night snack, Pluckers, located on Rio Grande Street, will offer one free appetizer on Aug. 25 with a minimum purchase of $5 and at least one party member owning a Pluckers Club account. With free options including the fried pickles, the holy mac or the fried cheese, all that is needed is a student ID to redeem this appetizer on the first day of class.
Blockbuster Movie Night Series: Lilo and Stitch — Aug. 28
Showtime, Campus Events + Entertainment’s sub-sect student organization, hosts movie nights in the Texas Union. Many of these blockbuster films include recently released movies, such as the new live-action Lilo and Stitch, which is playing for the first film night of the semester. Requiring no admission fee with a student ID, students are encouraged to bring blankets and comfy clothes to enjoy feature films.
Texas Block Party — Aug. 28
The Texas Block Party, hosted by University Housing and Dining, encourages students to bring their cowboy boots out for a night of dancing and refreshments on the corner of 21st Street and Speedway in front of Jester Center. Along with bringing fun and entertainment, this event is fully zero-waste. With live music from DJ Draco, games, activities and a special appearance from Hook ‘Em, UT’s mascot, this event invites students to celebrate before the end of the first week of class.
