The US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, kicked off Aug. 18 in Queens, New York.
Four former Longhorns are in the main draw, vying for one of tennis’s biggest honors.
Lloyd Glasspool
Glasspool is set to enter the US Open as the men’s doubles Association of Tennis Professionals world No. 1 and tournament favorite alongside his partner, Julian Cash.
The Englishman became the first Longhorn to achieve a professional No. 1 ranking in men’s doubles or singles after a string of title wins, including his first Grand Slam win at the Wimbledon Championships in July.
“You’ll probably hear from our voices that we had a good night, and we’re feeling a little rough, but it’s definitely worth it,” Glasspool told Sky Sports the morning after the final. “It was absolutely incredible; it’s a dream come true, and to be able to do it in front of all your home fans, your friends, your family — that was kind of my main thing I wanted to do, was give back to them.”
Glasspool played for the Longhorns from 2011 to 2015, capturing the men’s doubles title in his last season at Texas. Men’s doubles play will start in Queens on Aug. 30.
Lulu Sun
Ranked No. 164 on the Women’s Tennis Association tour, Sun won her maiden US Open main-draw match Sunday, defeating Colombian Camila Osorio in three sets.
The win marked her first Grand Slam victory since reaching the Wimbledon Championships quarterfinals in July 2024, in which she achieved a career-high ranking of No. 39.
Throughout the 2025 season, however, Lulu dropped out of the top 150 due to a drought of Grand Slam wins.
The New Zealander played one season for Texas before turning professional, helping the program secure its third title.
She will face No. 19 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium in round two.
Peyton Stearns
Stearns advanced to the second round Monday in a straight-set win over Darja Semenistaja.
Stearns, who is currently ranked No. 49, has had her best season on tour thus far. She won her maiden career title at the Rabat Grand Prix in May. She also achieved her first two wins over top-ten ranked players, Australian Open champion Madison Keys and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, at other tournaments.
In 2022, Stearns became the first player in program history to win the NCAA Division I Women’s Singles Championship.
The US Open is historically Stearns’ best Grand Slam, as she reached the Round of 16 back in 2023. She will face No. 28 seed Magdalena Fręch on Thursday.
Eliot Spizzirri
Spizzirri picked up his first-ever Grand Slam win in a main draw in men’s singles on Sunday with a straight-set victory over Stefan Dostanic.
Since turning pro, Spizzirri has struggled to make it out of the qualifying rounds of major tournaments, but will now play in the second round of a Grand Slam, facing No. 32 seed Luciano Darderi of Italy at the US Open on Thursday.
A recent graduate, Spizzirri was integral to the men’s tennis program and named the ITA National Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024.
