It was all too familiar a spot for No. 2 Texas Wednesday night.
Down 6-11 with no momentum and overall being outplayed in the fifth set, the Longhorns had to find a way.
And once again, just as they did in their last match against No. 5 Stanford, they outlasted No. 4 Louisville in another five-set thriller at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
The turnaround was sparked by one of the more exciting points of the season, when at 8-12, junior libero Ramsey Gary went crashing into the courtside seats and miraculously saved the point, one that finally culminated with a kill by junior outside hitter Torrey Stafford.
This was the first point of a 4-0 run that evened the score. Texas would go on to save a match point before winning the final set 16-14 on a kill by freshman outside hitter Abby Vander Wal.
The match started fairly sloppily for Texas, opening with four errors. The Longhorns eventually took the lead briefly, but had to defend against an onslaught of kills from Louisville freshman outside hitter Payton Petersen, who totaled seven kills in the set. This, combined with the Longhorns’ eight errors in the set, was ultimately too much to overcome, and they went on to lose the set 23-25.
Texas responded strongly in the second set, generating more kills despite still totaling seven errors. Stafford led the way with five kills as Texas clinically took the set 25-16.
Similar to the first set, the third set was another back-and-forth affair. The two teams found themselves even at 16, desperately seeking an advantage. But two aces by freshman Louisville setter Hannah Kenny gave Louisville the lead, and the team never looked back. The Cardinals won the set 25-21, and for the first time this season, the Longhorns found themselves down 1-2 after three sets.
Having to dig deep, Texas became much more active at the net. In the fourth set, the Longhorns generated four blocks early on to set the tone. Freshman outside hitters Cari Spears and Abby Vander Wal totaled five and four kills, respectively, as Texas claimed the fourth set 25-22 to force yet another five-set match, which it would ultimately prevail in.
Stafford, Spears and Vander Wal each finished with double-digit kills to lead the way, as Texas, despite totaling 35 errors and only a .153 hit percentage, found a way to win and improve its season record to 5–0.
The Longhorns return to Austin to face No. 9 Arizona State in another marquee matchup on Sept. 14, as they’ll play in Gregory Gymnasium for the first time this season.
