Although Halloween falls on Oct. 31 every year, the date still manages to sneak up on many, commencing the seasonal challenge of finding the perfect costume. By the time one starts planning, stores sell out, prices skyrocket and, somehow, everyone at the party shows up as Harley Quinn and The Joker.
Sometimes, with a little creativity, a little bit of effort and zero spending, the ideal costume could be collecting dust, hung up in a closet. The Daily Texan put together a list of last-minute costumes inspired by everyday wardrobe.
White-button-up
The perfect Halloween costume can be achieved with something as simple as a white button-up. Channel Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City” by belting the shirt to cinch the waist and pair it with a chic pair of heels, or stick to the classic Mia Wallace from “Pulp Fiction.” Simply pair black pants with a dab of fake blood below the nose –– but make sure to perfect “the twist” just in case Vincent Vega shows up to the same party and asks to dance. For those looking to venture into horror, throw on a raincoat on top of business casual to embrace Patrick Bateman in “American Psycho.”
Denim, leather and suede
Denim, leather, and suede will be your best friends with this costume. Add some boots, messy hair and tinted sunglasses to get into character. Layer anything crochet or fringed, warm up with vocal exercise and add a subtle attitude to sell the part. Whether channeling Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan, or characters from “Daisy Jones and The Six,” the ‘70s rockstar vibe will live on.
Athleisure
To roll out of bed costume-ready, take after Adam Sandler’s off-duty streetwear. Throw on old basketball shorts, any oversized tee and high socks with sneakers. To spice it up, add sunglasses and a straw hat. Or to step it up, wear a comfy sweatsuit, a backward hat and get ready to break dance like Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike.”
Y2K chic
A Y2K-inspired outfit never misses. Dress up as the “Mean Girls” crew with your friends, but make sure to wear pink (or cut two holes in a shirt you no longer care for). Go full Lizzie McGuire in Italy, Alex Russo on her tropical vacation or Teddy Duncan on Christmas. Any protagonist from the 2000s will do. Add a twist and dress up with a friend as Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana.
Fun with friends
The handy button-up and a tie transform an average person into Jim Halpert from “The Office,” and the suit and tie’s female counterpart converts the wearer into his girlfriend, Pam Beesly — ultimate power couple. For something more cinematic, try Ferris Bueller and Sloane Peterson from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” or John and Jane from “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” With a group of friends who also procrastinated their costumes, recreate the most iconic ensemble casts, such as “Friends,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “How I Met Your Mother,” or even the Barden Bellas.
