With Longhorns returning over the weekend, students come ready for a new year and a new semester on the Forty Acres. With New Year’s resolutions at the forefront of many students’ minds, they set goals for productivity and balance. However, as schedules get busier and assignments pick up, resolutions sometimes fade into the background by the middle of the semester. The Daily Texan compiled a list of campus resources to help maintain these goals long after the first weeks of January.
For some students, staying active can become boring and tiresome, feeling unmotivated to work out. UT RecSports offers an Adventure Trips program, offering an easy way to stay active while trying new experiences. Trips for this semester include hiking, camping, canoeing, mountain biking and more. RecSports provides everything from transportation to gear, making it easy for students to get involved.
Resolutions prioritizing mental health tend to be neglected. The Longhorn Wellness Center provides multiple programs, workshops and peer support to help students manage stress, burnout and anxiety. Wellness resources such as MindBody lounges and sleep kits can also be found in the center. Taking advantage of these resources helps students maintain their goals for balance throughout the spring semester.
Study Spaces
Many students aim to “lock in” academically every year, but may need a change of scenery. When the Perry-Castañeda Library feels crowded and overwhelming, or your room feels too distracting, students can try new study spaces across campus. Some examples include the Littlefield Patio Cafe for a quiet outdoor environment or the newly opened Jo’s Coffee located in West Campus. Trying out different spaces helps students stay focused and avoid burnout.
One common goal students have focuses on finances. Texas Financial Wellness offers resources such as FAFSA workshops and tools on how to budget and manage expenses. In addition to these workshops, Financial Wellness offers one-on-one support with Certified Personal Financial Counselors, helping students make stronger financial decisions and reducing the anxiety that comes with money.
Fueling the body is incredibly important, but this becomes difficult when classes, work and other commitments take over, often leaving students with convenient choices that may be unhealthier in the long run. Healthyhorns offers nutrition resources such as help with meal planning, building your diet and counseling with registered dietitians. These resources aid students in achieving healthy eating habits and improving energy throughout the semester.
