Texas women’s swim and dive will compete against the Texas A&M Aggies in the Lone Star Showdown on Jan. 30 in College Station, Texas.
This dual meet extends beyond preparing both teams for the NCAA or Southeastern Conference championships. It is a rivalry and tradition that dates back years for the Aggies and Longhorns.
The victor of this meet contributes one point toward their entire athletic program’s total points to take home the annual rivalry series trophy. The Longhorns clinched the 2024-25 Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown trophy, 11–5 points over the Aggies. In order to take the trophy home, either school must come on top in points. These points are accumulated across the wins for each university’s athletic program.
Currently, the Longhorns are behind the Aggies by 2.5 points. The current points scored from both programs come from soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball and football.
Last year, at the Lone Star Showdown in Austin, the Longhorns dominated the Aggies in both women’s and men’s. The women claimed victory, scoring 197-102 points, and so did the men’s side, scoring 218.5-80.5 over the Aggies.
This season, the Longhorns have performed well, with a current record of 2–1, picking up their first loss of the season this past weekend. Coming off a loss against Louisville at the Eddie Reese Texas Showdown, the Longhorns have another opportunity to gain the momentum they need to add another win to their record this season and grow from their errors against Louisville.
The Aggies currently hold a record of 5–2 and are coming off a defeat to Alabama this past week for both the women’s and men’s teams. The Aggie women lost 131-169 and the men, 141.5-158.5.
Key leaders from both teams to keep an eye out for in the pool are Longhorn sophomore Jillian Cox, who is NCAA-qualified and just won her third SEC Swimmer of the Week, and Aggie fifth-year senior swimmer Kaitlyn Owens, who has NCAA championship experience.
With both teams coming off losses, fans will anticipate how well their teams are able to jump back from adversity and take the opportunity to grow during this competition.
Following the Lone Star Showdown, the Longhorns and Aggies will meet again at the SEC Championship in Knoxville, Tenn., Feb. 17-21. The Longhorns took the title, and the Aggies finished eighth last season.
