As South by Southwest takes over downtown Austin, college students prepare for the many film and music events. Without the Austin Convention Center this year, SXSW spreads itself from South Lamar Boulevard to Congress Avenue, with some events closer to campus. For college students wanting to attend SXSW on a budget, The Texan found four ways to make the most of one’s experience without breaking the bank.
KVRX Showcase
For those wanting to stay on campus during SXSW, the Pearl Street Co-Op, partnering with student-run radio station KVRX, will host a showcase on Friday, March 13, from noon to 9 p.m. An unofficial event for SXSW, the showcase features different artists from around Austin and the U.S., including Badger Hunt, French Film and Comet. Admission to the event is free and 18+, requiring an ID. The co-op suggests attendees bring swimsuits, as the pool will be open for swimming during the event. Located at 2000 Pearl St., the event takes place just outside of campus, close to those living in West Campus.
Congress Avenue Block Party
Unlike past years, the Congress Avenue Block Party is free to the public, running from March 12 to March 18 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This event offers complimentary drinks, food and merchandise for all SXSW attendees. Located along the 900 Congress St. closure, participating vendors include Austin Eastciders, My/Mochi and Laura Geller Beauty. In typical block party fashion, the street will experience closures, keeping in mind the parking and travel experience.
Radio Day stage
Each year, SXSW partners with radio stations to put on performances. Some of these radio stations include KUTX and The Current, based in Minneapolis. Located at 701 E. 10th St. at The Downright Hotel, admission is free for the Radio Day Stage event, giving attendees access to live music, both in-person and over broadcast. In the evening, the program shifts to a “Global Stage,” inviting artists from around the world to perform, promoting a day full of music ranging from local bands to international sounds.
Film screenings
While film screenings at SXSW allow platinum badge members priority admission, these screenings are also general admission, following the admission of badge members. For some film screenings, if space allows, tickets will be sold starting at $35 15 minutes prior to the screening. While it is recommended by SXSW to obtain a wristband for entry, general admission maintains a first-come, first-served basis. Popular film screenings will include “Forbidden Fruits,” “Pretty Lethal” and “I Love Boosters.”
Travel for events
Aside from Ubering to events, where costs vary dramatically depending on the day and time, students can take the CapMetro bus for free with their student ID.
Carpooling with friends provides another cost-effective travel method, making attending these SXSW events a group outing. College students who own a car and drive to events may park along the street or park at a nearby garage, with some fees ranging from $5 to $30.
