Dropping the doubles point against No. 27 Kentucky didn’t matter for the No. 3 Texas Longhorns.
Texas responded with four singles wins to defeat Kentucky, 4-2, on Sunday at the Boone Tennis Complex, closing out a two-match conference road trip with a pair of ranked victories. The Longhorns are now 7-2 in Southeastern Conference play and 16-6 overall on the year.
Texas found itself trailing early after coming up short in a tightly contested doubles point. The freshman duo of Kalin Ivanovski and Abel Forger fell 6-4 at No. 1.
The No. 23 pair in the country, Texas senior Sebastian Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneau, dropped a tiebreaker at court two after Kentucky evened the score.
That deficit didn’t last long.
Sophomore Oliver Ojakaar was first off the court in singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 89 Charlelie Cosnet on court five to even the match. Marionneau followed up with a 7-5, 6-3 victory on court six, giving Texas a 2-1 lead.
Kentucky answered at court two, with No. 19 Ivanovski falling in straight sets to even the overall score at 2-2.
From there, Texas took control of the match. Gorzny delivered one of the match’s defining performances, defeating No. 22 Eli Stephenson 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1 singles to put the Longhorns back in front.
Gorzny closed both sets late, winning key points down the stretch to avoid extended play. Moments later, sophomore No. 43 Sebastian Eriksson secured the clinch.
After dropping the opening set, Eriksson responded with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3, taking control in the final two sets and pulling away quickly in the decider to seal the match for Texas.
Freshman No. 90 Abel Forger held a 2-0 lead in the third set at No. 4 when play was halted.
The win capped a strong weekend for the Longhorns, who also swept No. 13 Vanderbilt 4-0 on Friday. Texas has now won three of its last five matches and continues to build momentum in conference play.
Texas will return home next to face the No. 48 Tennessee Volunteers on Friday at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin.
