Former Texas women’s basketball guard Rori Harmon was selected No. 34 overall by the Washington Mystics in the 2026 WNBA Draft Monday night.
“I’m just super excited to start something new, to close a door and open a new door,” Harmon said. “I’m almost speechless. I’ve been smiling this whole night, and I can’t stop smiling because this is what you dream about.”
Harmon became the 14th Longhorn to be drafted in the league’s history.
In her five years with Texas, Harmon has etched herself as a program legend, breaking the all-time program assist and steals record in her last season under Vic Schaefer. She is also the only player in women’s Division I history to reach more than 1500 points, 900 assists, 600 rebounds and 350 steals.
Leading Texas to back-to-back Final Fours, Harmon averaged 8.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.8 steals in her final season. Over her career, Harmon was a four-time AP All-American honorable mention selection.
Harmon had to wait for most of the draft, being the fourth pick in the third and final round. The Mystics are based in Washington, D.C., and training camp begins within the month. Training camp typically lasts a couple of weeks, and Harmon will compete with the current roster, players drafted and other invitees for 12 roster spots.
Seeing Harmon’s development over five years, Schaefer is confident her ability to lead and run a team alongside her defensive style of play will transition well in the WNBA.
“If I had a job in the WNBA, (she’d) be the first one I’d go get,” Schaefer said. “She can run your team. She has no ego. … She’s going to continue to guard and defend and create problems defensively (because) that’s who she is.”
