As the FIFA World Cup returns to North America, soccer fans across Austin are finding ways to take part in one of the world’s biggest sporting events. While Austin is not hosting matches, the city has still become part of the tournament atmosphere, with the Saudi Arabia national team training at Q2 Stadium and local venues opening their doors to fans eager to witness the action.
For UT students, dedicated World Cup watch parties in West Campus are relatively limited. However, several venues in the area offer opportunities to watch the tournament with fellow fans throughout the summer.
Located in the heart of West Campus, Victory Lap is one of the easiest options for students looking to watch World Cup matches. The sports bar has promoted watch parties for select U.S. Men’s National Team matches and is offering $4 red, white and blue shots every time the United States scores. Students can check Victory Lap’s social media accounts for additional announcements throughout the tournament.
Students hoping to stay on campus can catch World Cup matches at the Texas Union. While the Union is not hosting official watch parties, games will be shown on screens in the Cactus Cafe and the Underground. The location offers a convenient option for students looking to follow the tournament without crossing Guadalupe Street.
Austin FC Official Watch Parties
Austin FC and When Where What Austin have partnered to create the Austin Soccer Celebration, a citywide series of events centered around the World Cup. Through July 19, Austin FC is turning East Austin’s Inn Cahoots into Casa VERDE, a free 37-day soccer hub with live viewings of every World Cup match, daily programming and special events. Admission is free with registration, making it one of the most comprehensive viewing experiences for World Cup fans this summer.
American Outlaws Austin at Haymaker
American Outlaws Austin, the local chapter of the national supporters group for the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, is hosting World Cup watch parties at Haymaker, located just east of campus on Manor Road. This venue offers fans the chance to watch matches with some of Austin’s most dedicated soccer supporters, and is easily accessible from UT via the 320 and 837 buses.
Scholz Garten, one of Austin’s oldest restaurants and beer gardens, is also hosting World Cup viewing events during the tournament. Located near downtown, this venue only requires a short trip from campus via the 7, 20 or 837 buses and provides another option for students looking to watch matches in an all-ages environment.
