In today’s day and age of college athletics, change is always inevitable, whether it’s roster turnovers or coaches finding new homes. Texas baseball will be dealing with the latter.
Just days after the Longhorns’ 2026 season ended short of a national championship at the College World Series, head coach Jim Schlossnagle’s ball club will be seeing a major change to the coaching staff.
On Friday, D1 Baseball’s Kendall Rogers broke the news on X that Nolan Cain, associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, will be leaving the program after just two seasons, heading to one of Texas’ biggest rivals, the Texas A&M Aggies, to fulfill the same role.
In addition to his role as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator on the Forty Acres over the last two seasons, Cain has also been the Longhorns’ third base coach and has helped mentor the catchers.
Cain joined Schlossnagle, jumping ship from Texas A&M to Texas when the Longhorns head coach took the gig in Austin ahead of the 2025 campaign.
In his two seasons with the program, Cain helped guide the Longhorns to a 90-29 record, a trip to the College World Series for the first time since 2022 and helped construct the No. 1 recruiting class according to both Baseball America and Perfect Game for the 2026 cycle.
Trading burnt orange for maroon is a pseudo-homecoming for the associate head coach, having spent three seasons at Texas A&M from 2022 to 2024 under Schlossnagle.
Cain joined Schlossnagle’s staff at Texas A&M initially as an assistant coach in June of 2021, ahead of the 2022 season, before being elevated to associate head coach before the 2024 season. In Cain’s first stint in College Station, the Aggies totaled a 135-62 record and reached the College World Series twice.
Schlossnagle already had plenty of work in the offseason looking to retool his roster for the 2027 season. Now, he will be in the market to fill a vacancy at an important spot on his coaching staff.
