A man was arrested and charged for allegedly breaking into three West Campus Co-op residences in the early morning of June 10, according to the Austin Police Department.
Callers reported to APD that the suspect, later identified as Octavius Brown by APD, entered the New Guild Co-op building on West 23rd Street through a partially open window and entered a resident’s bedroom, APD’s public information office said in an email statement. After the resident woke up, Brown left the room. Then, a second New Guild resident found him masturbating in the kitchen and told him to leave, according to the APD email.
In the email, APD stated that later, a member of the Pearl Street Co-op reported seeing an unknown individual jump over a fence and enter the co-op through a back door. He then entered their room, pulled on the member’s shorts and masturbated, according to the email. Police said he left the building after he was told to by the member.
Two hours later, a resident of 21st Street Co-op reported that they woke up to the suspect standing in their room and masturbating, according to APD’s statement. He then approached the resident’s bed, climbed on top of the victim, claimed he had a gun and tried to remove their shirt, the email said. When the victim refused, Brown started to strangle the victim, who was able to escape and leave the room, the email stated.
Brown has a criminal record for various misdemeanors and felonies since 2013, according to Travis County court records.
Later that day, APD officers arrested Brown and transported him to the Travis County Jail, according to APD’s email statement. Brown was charged with three counts of Burglary of Habitation with intended sex offense, according to the court documents. His first hearing will be on July 1.
Brown’s court-appointed attorney declined to comment.
This case remains open and under ongoing investigation, according to APD.
