LBJ Library releases full schedule for three-day Civil Rights Summit

Thursday afternoon, the LBJ Library and Presidential Museum announced the full schedule for the three-day Civil Rights Summit that will begin April 8.

In addition to a keynote address from President Barack Obama and talks from three former presidents, the summit will feature nine panels with topics ranging from civil rights in sports to the role music plays in developing social consciousness. The summit, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, will include former UN ambassadors and cabinet members as well as members of the NFL and NBA halls of fame.

Tuesday, April 8

“Gay Marriage: A Civil Right?” (12:35 p.m.)

  • Moderator: John Avlon, editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast
  • Participants: Attorney David Boies and Theodore Olson

“Pathway to the American Dream: Immigration Policy in the 21st Century” (1:40 p.m.)

  • Introduction: Ben Barnes, former lieutenant governor of Texas
  • Moderator: Antonio Villaraigosa, former mayor of Los Angeles
  • Participants: Juliáan Castro, mayor of San Antonio, and Haley Barbour, former governor of Mississippi

“Music and Social Consciousness” (2:40 p.m.)

  • Introduction: Patty Griffin, singer and songwriter

  • Speakers: Graham Nash, member of Crosby, Stills and Nash and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and Mavis Staples, singer and civil rights activist

Wednesday, April 9

“LBJ and MLK: Fulfilling a Promise, Realizing a Dream” (12:35 p.m.)

  • Introduction: Tom Johnson, Executive Assistant to President Lyndon Johnson and former President & Chairman of CNN

  • Moderator: Author and journalist Todd Purdum

  • Speakers: Historian and author Taylor Branch, Joseph Califano, Jr., special assistant to President Lyndon Johnson, and Andrew Young, former congressman and United Nations ambassador

“Sports: Leveling the Playing Field” (1:40 p.m.)

  • Introduction: Michael Cramer, Director, The Texas Program in Sports and Media at The University of Texas

  • Moderator: Harry Edwards, professor emeritus from the University of California, Berkeley

  • Speakers: Bill Russell, former center for the Boston Celtics, and Jim Brown, former Cleveland Browns running back

“Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement: Views from the Front Line” (2:40 p.m.)

  • Introduction: Reverend Bernice A. King, chief executive officer of The King Center

  • Moderator: Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture

  • Speakers: Julian Bond, former NAACP chairman, U.S. representative John Lewis (D-Georgia) and Andrew Young, former congressman and United Nations ambassador

Thursday, April 10

Keynote Address by President Barack Obama (11:30 a.m.)

  • Introduction: Bob Hutchings, dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs

  • Moderator: Shirley Franklin, former mayor of Atlanta

  • Speakers: David Robinson, former center for the San Antonio Spurs, Maria Shriver, journalist and former First Lady of California and Steve Stoute, founder and CEO of marketing firm Translation

“Women: How High is the Glass Ceiling?” (3:00 p.m.)

  • Introduction: Vivian Pickard, president of the General Motors Foundation

  • Moderator: Tina Brown, CEO of Tina Brown Live Media

  • Speakers: Billie Jean King, tennis player and activist, and Elizabeth Smith, CEO of Bloomin’ Brands, Inc.

“Education: The Ultimate Civil Right” (4:00 p.m.)

  • Introduction: Former UT president Larry Faulkner

  • Moderator: Bob Scheiffer, CBS News reporter

  • Speakers: U.S. Representative George Miller (D-California) and Margaret Spellings, former secretary of education and president of the George W. Bush Presidential Center

Address by and Conversation with Former President George W. Bush (5:30 p.m.)

Haley Barbour, the former governor of Mississippi, will be a participant in the Immigration Policy panel on April 8. President Barack Obama will be delivering the Summit's keynote address on April 10.
