The School of Law dean and a UT law alumnus unveiled Friday a sculpture of James DeAnda, a lawyer, social activist and federal judge.
DeAnda, a UT alumnus, fought for the integration of Mexican-Americans into Texas schools. Law school Dean Larry Sager and Houston attorney Scott Atlas discussed DeAnda’s accomplishments before unveiling the bronze bust sculpted by Utah artist Edward Hlavka.
DeAnda played a critical role in fighting discrimination against Mexican-American students in the Texas public education system. According to a press release, the sculpture will signify the impact of DeAnda’s accomplishments and contributions to the School of Law.
